Comparison to Other Technologies
DSL
or the Digital Subscriber Line has come after a few other technologies
already. The main other types of former internet connections are:
dial up access technology and the cable modem technology. There
are seven basic levels of comparison that we will bring up. These
are:Service Provisioning, Security, Speed, Value-Added Services,
Internet Access, Productivity,and Connection.
Service Provisioning
DSL has easier and definitely more convenient
service provisioning for residential high-rises (condominiums,
apartments) and other residential homes because these structures
are already wired with copper facilities unlike cable, which still
needs to be deployed.
Security
DSL as mentioned earlier among the benefits, is more secure than
the other connections because it has a "dedicated connection"
to the subscriber. This is unlike cable internet, which has a
shared connection to the network.
Speed
Since the DSL service offers a point to point
connection from the subscriber and the Central Office, it has
more reliable speeds than cable internet. Cable speeds can vary
according to how many users increasingly access the network.
Value-Added Services
DSL will definitely offer more value added
services to it's users as compared to dial-up and cable internet.
Internet Access
DSL offers high-speed unlimited Internet
access (128 kbps and 256 kbps) unlike dial-up internet, which
only offers rates of 33kbps or 56 kbps.
Productivity
DSL allows the user of this service to talk
on the phone and fax while surfing the Net. This means two
things: no busy signals and higher productivity.
Connection
DSL is always connected no matter what time. No time is wasted logging on to the Internet
unlike dial-up internet.
